UV-light-free phototherapy

The UV light-free phototherapy (marketed as Dermodyne or light vaccination ) is a special form of phototherapy that especially in severe degrees of inflammatory lesions, such as eczema and psoriasis is used.

Treatment with high-dose blue light (400–500 nm, 28.9 J / cm²) led in a study with 36 patients with severe neurodermatitis after 3 and 6 months to a 41% and 54% decrease in the inflammation score (EASI) as well as the consumption of external corticosteroids.

Treatment effects of UV light-free phototherapy lasting for months have been described in studies for atopic hand eczema and for work-related hand eczema.

In contrast to all current UV therapies, the UV light-free phototherapy did not lead to a decrease, but an increase in the number of lymphocytes and Langerhans cells in the skin. The anti-inflammatory mechanism of action of UV light-free phototherapy is new and differs from other UV therapies in the lack of direct immunosuppression of the skin.

The German Dermatological Society criticizes these studies. In a statement published in May 2012, there are significant methodological deficiencies. It is also criticized that no studies on the optimal frequency of light therapy, studies on remission treatment, on the specific effect of the light spectrum etc. have been carried out. In this context, the German Dermatological Society also accuses the manufacturer that 6 years after the presentation of the therapeutic approach there is still no evidence-based study, but the method is presented quite widely in the media.
