Recumbent tandem
Recumbent tandems are recumbent bicycles for two riders . The frame can often be divided for transport reasons.
Most recumbent tandems are manufactured in small batches or are self-made.
Back-to-back tandems (also known as Janus tandems), in which the rear driver looks to the rear, are comparatively compact. This seating arrangement is often combined with separate drives, so that each rider drives a wheel , has his own gearshift and can pedal with his own individual cadence . Front-wheel drive is a certain technical challenge because of the steering of the front wheel. It can be released by either steering the entire drive, including the crank and chain, according to the articulated steering principle, or by guiding the chain along the steering axle and twisting it there when steering (see two-wheeler with front-wheel drive ).
As with the recumbent bike, there are different seat heights and seating positions, from very low and flat for sporty use to a posture with the back only slightly tilted back (as with the armchair bike ).
The combination of a recumbent tandem and a recumbent tricycle is called a recumbent tricycle tandem .
