The Liffey Service Tunnel is a line tunnel for various line carriers in Dublin , Ireland . The owner is the City Council of Dublin City.

The tunnel was planned by the Atkins engineering company and in a joint venture by the German construction group Ed. Züblin AG , Stuttgart and the Irish construction company Cleary & Doyle Contracting Ltd. , Wexford created. Construction time was from September 2006 to October 2008.

Tunnel planning

The tunnel was built using the pipe jacking method. The pre-pressed reinforcing steel pipes had i. d. Usually a length of 2.5 m. From the southern end of the East Link Bridge, the tunnel crosses under the River Liffey in the direction of the northern quay wall (North Quay Wall), approx. 150 m west of The Point Theater event center . The start and target shafts are 19 and 22 m deep. The tunnel passes the shipping channel in the river with a cover of approx. 8 m.
