Linda Smith (psychologist)
Linda B. Smith (born before 1973) is an American cognitive scientist and psychologist and professor at Indiana University .
Linda Smith graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor's degree in 1973 and received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977 . In 1977 she became Assistant Professor, 1981 Associate Professor and 1985 Professor at Indiana University, where she has been Chancellor's Professor since 1997 and Distinguished Professor since 2007. In 1997 she received her university's Tracy M. Sonneborn Award (the university’s highest honor for faculty members). From 2005 to 2012 she headed the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience (Psychological and Brain Science).
She deals with early childhood cognitive and linguistic development and published with Esther Thelen an approach based on the theory of dynamic systems. In 1988 she and colleagues published an essay in which she discovered the tendency of young children to classify words based on the shape of objects.
In 2013 she received the David E. Rumelhart Prize . She is on the Council of the Cognitive Science Society, of which she has been a Fellow since 2008. In 2007 she became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2006 of the American Psychological Society , and in 2019 a member of the National Academy of Sciences .
