history

Building history

The Lindenhofbad is on the edge of the Lindenhof Park around the eponymous Villa Lindenhof . After the park passed into the ownership of the city from the Gruber family in 1956, the construction of an outdoor pool in the western part of the park began in 1958. The city building department, headed by Häringer, was in charge of the design. In the course of this, a concrete bridge was also built, which was to serve as a connecting element between the adjacent garden monument and the bathing lawn. The construction work was finished in 1959.

use

Until 2012, access to the bathroom was only possible by paying an entrance fee. In 2012 the city decided to open the Lindenhofbad to the general public and invite them to visit it free of charge. A lifeguard has also been dispensed with since then. A support association is responsible for maintaining the pool.

Description and meaning

The two-storey building is in a horseshoe shape, on the side opening to the lake, delimited by a staircase. The inner courtyard, in which two trees have been planted, is lined with a gallery on the upper floor , from which one can access the changing rooms. A semicircular porch is attached to the eastern wing of the building, which is divided into a terrace on the upper floor and a café on the ground floor below. In front of the building there is a lawn for sunbathing, which is delimited by an artificial bank design with a harbor and pier.

The Lindenhofbad is an outstanding example of 1950s architecture and a building of high architectural quality. The Bavarian Chamber of Architects found on their website that the building shows “all the features of lightness and exhilaration that were typical of the time” and classifies the bathroom as post-war architecture worth preserving .
