Shemsi Beqiri (* 3. May 1986 in Vitina , SFR Yugoslavia , now Kosovo ) is a Kosovar - Swiss Middleweight - Kickboxer .

Athletic career

His father had worked in Switzerland since the 1970s, and Shemsi Beqiri came to Basel as a five-year-old through family reunification . In Basel he started his training in karate and taekwondo , at the age of 16 he switched to kickboxing and muay thai . His three younger brothers Sabedin (* 1987), Hysni (* 1989) and Ilir († 2015) are or were also professional kickboxers. Beqiri won his first regional title in 2004 ( WPKC Swiss, -63.5 kg / 140 lb , Muay Thai Championship in Basel). He won a European title in 2007 against Andrej Bruhl ( WFC European Welterweight, 67 kg / 147lb ). In 2008 he won his first title under the World Kickboxing Association ( Welterweight, -67 kg / 147lb ) against Vahidin Tufekčić in Nova Gorica . On December 19, 2009 he won the WFC Muay Thai world title in the middleweight division against Giga Chikadze in Zurich . In 2012 Beqiri was signed by the newly founded kickboxing promoter Glory World Series (Singapore), he won the middleweight division against Yoshihiro Satō in "Glory 1: Stockholm". After this victory, Beqiri appeared for the first time in international rankings of the best kickboxers (on LiverKick.com as number 10 in the middleweight division). Beqiri was "Glory 12: New York" planned as an opponent of Ky Hollenbeck , but canceled for unspecified reasons. In “Glory 14: Zagreb” in March 2014, he was scheduled against Murthel Groenhart , but had to cancel due to injuries sustained in an attack on his training center.

Controversy

In Switzerland, Beqiri became known to a wider public through his involvement in the “ Carlos case” . It is a young violent criminal who was looked after by the youth attorney of the Canton of Zurich in a “special setting”, the costs of which caused a public sensation. This included the supervision and training of the young person by Beqiri, who was paid 5300 Swiss francs a month.

In connection with this, it became known that Beqiri had been convicted of assault in February 2013 for an incident that occurred in January 2012. After his condemnation became public, the Swiss Muay Thai Association announced Beqiri's expulsion; Beqiri countered that he had voluntarily resigned from the association due to a rivalry with his former coach, the Portuguese kickboxer Paulo Balicha .

The rivalry between Beqiri and Balicha culminated on February 24, 2014 in an armed attack on Beqiri and his training center by Balicha and at least 20 masked accomplices. The attackers kept those present, including children, in check so that Balicha could fight a tough individual fight with Beqiri. The fight was videotaped. Six people were injured and there were also broken bones. In September 2018, Balicha was sentenced as the main culprit in the first instance to a partial sentence of two years and nine months, of which 12 months are unconditional, for multiple deprivation of liberty, assault, simple bodily harm and attempted serious bodily harm . The remaining 16 defendants had seven acquittals for assault and conditional sentences of varying amounts. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
