The honorary citizenship is the highest honor of the Saxon town Bernstadt ad Eigen .

Since 1849 the following six people have received this honor.

Otto von Bismarck
  1. Carl Friedrich Braeske
    Dyer and Senator
    Awarded in 1849
    Braeske was the son of the art, woad and fairy dyer Carl Albrecht Braeske. The family had come to Bernstadt from East Prussia in 1792. After taking over his father's business, he made a contribution to the development of the cloth trade and to his work as a senator.
  2. Karl Theophil Borott
    Headmaster
    Awarded in 1864
    Borott was the director of the local school from 1823 to 1867 and developed it into a town and country school . On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, he was made an honorary citizen of the city. At the same time, the Saxon government awarded him the Cross of Honor for the Order of Albrecht.
  3. Otto von Bismarck (born April 1, 1815 in Schönhausen; † July 30, 1898 in Friedrichsruh near Hamburg)

    As in many cities of the German Empire, after the victorious Franco-German War, Bismarck was made an honorary citizen in Bernstadt ad Eigen without any direct local reference. As part of the worship of his person also was Breitenstein in Bismarckhöhe renamed (after 1945 Peace height) and a Bismarck oak planted.
  4. Adolf Hanspach
    Soap maker
    Awarded on January 2, 1874
    Hanspach managed the Bernstädter Sparkasse from 1854 to 1860 in addition to his job and was also a councilor. On the occasion of his 25-year membership on the city council, he was awarded honorary citizenship.
  5. Karl-Werner Günzel (born September 4, 1949 in Bernstadt ad Eigen, † March 29, 2013 in Berlin)
    Awarded on November 27, 1999
    Günzel was recognized for his long-standing support of the Bernstadt Heimatmuseum and the creation of the Karl Werner Günzel Foundation for the promotion of the cultural heritage and the care of the city's cultural assets as well as for his research on the beginnings of rocket technology and the life and work of rocket pioneer Klaus Riedel with the Honorary citizenship honored.
  6. Peter Schöne
    Local chronicler
    Awarded on January 4, 2003
    Schöne headed the local history museum for many years and anchored it in the city's cultural life. As a local writer, he created an extensive work on local history.
