The list of honorary citizens of Nonnenhorn shows all citizens of Nonnenhorn who have been granted honorary citizenship.

Honorary citizenship is the highest municipal award of the Nonnenhorn community. So far, seven people have been made honorary citizens .

Note: The listing is done chronologically according to the date of award. It may not be complete after 1983.

The honorary citizens of the Nonnenhorn community

  1. Albert Rätzer (born December 25, 1836 in Bern, † September 11, 1907 in Güttingen aB)

    Awarded on May 25, 1907
    Rätzer lived only a short time in Nonnenhorn. He was considered an eccentric. After his departure, he made two donations to the congregation for the St. James Chapel. In view of the friendly approach, the community committee decided to make him an honorary citizen. He was murdered three and a half months later.
  2. Johann Gierer (June 17, 1850 - May 2, 1923)

    Gierer was mayor of Nonnenhorn from 1900 to 1919. During his tenure in 1911 the place got electric light. In 1912 the steamship site was inaugurated, with which the place was connected to the Bodenseedampfschifffahrt. On the occasion of his resignation he was granted honorary citizenship.
  3. Josef Kling (born November 22, 1868 - † March 29, 1925)

    The son of the former mayor of Nonnenhorn, Erasmus Kling, was elected councilor in 1894 at the age of 26. With extraordinary tenacity he pursued his father's plan to connect the place to the bottom sea steamship. The pier was opened in 1912. In 1898 he and his brother Georg took over the estate of the wine merchant Hugo May and brought it to full bloom. When he returned home from the war weakened in 1919, he passed his business into the hands of others and resigned as an alderman.
  4. David Schnell (born May 31, 1849 - March 31, 1932)

    Schnell was the son of the Nonnenhorn community cashier Georg Schnell and the grandson of the former headmaster David Schnell. In 1894 he followed in his father's footsteps and became a community cashier himself. He remained in office until 1919.
  5. Peter Bullrich (born November 3, 1883 - † November 2, 1964)

    Bullrich spent his youth in Strasbourg and after studying agriculture at the Technical University of Munich came to Nonnenhorn with his family in January 1924. On his estate he devoted himself to animal and plant breeding and achieved such great success that in 1930 he was appointed a member of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society. Towards the end of the Second World War he was the leader of the 300-man Volkssturm. At the request of the local farmer leader Johann Schnell, he disbanded the Volkssturm one day before the French army marched in. Since Mayor Guido Haag had offered the surrender without a fight, Bullrich saved the place from heavy fighting with this step. On the occasion of his 75th birthday, he was made an honorary citizen of the community.

  7. Theresia Feneberg (born November 19, 1902 - † January 9, 1983)

    Hans Feneberg worked all his life in the wine and fruit shop of his brother-in-law Jakob Schnell. For 41 years he did voluntary service in the Nonnenhorn Voluntary Fire Brigade, including seven years as a commander. In addition, he was a member of the Wasserburg Music Association and the Nonnenhorn Liederkranzes as well as a board member of the savings and loan association.
    Theresia Feneberg came from Ebersbach bei Obergünzung and married her husband in 1939. She also worked in Jakob Schnell's company.
    In 1969 the couple who had remained childless sold their property in Schneckenwinkel and in the following years repeatedly donated money to the community for social purposes. In appreciation of the great contribution to the well-being of the local community, in particular in recognition of the promotion of kindergarten construction and the interests of the volunteer fire brigade, both were granted honorary citizenship by unanimous decision of the local council.
