The list of number one hits in the folk (country & western) charts in the USA (1949) is initially based on the most played titles in jukeboxes ( Most Played Juke Box Folk Records ) in the USA in 1949, as determined by Billboard . Since 1948, the Billboard magazine also determined the sales figures for folk records at relevant retailers, shown in the category Best Selling Retail Folk Records . On June 25, the two categories were renamed Folk (Country & Western) . This year there were twelve ( Juke Box ) and seven ( Retail ) number one titles.
