Little Cumbrae Castle is a tower house on the Scottish island of Castle Island in the Council Area of North Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The facility is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

The structure was probably built in the 15th century. However, there was a previous building. Even in early times, Little Cumbrae seems to have been under the Scottish royal family. Robert II lived in the castle between 1375 and 1384. The Tower House that is preserved today was set on fire by Oliver Cromwell's troops in 1653 and has been in ruins since then. However, their condition is rated as relatively good.

Little Cumbrae Castle is located on the small tidal island Castle Island just off the Little Cumbrae coast. The elongated building has a base area of ​​12.5 m × 8.8 m and a height of 14 m. It has three floors on which a circular battlement with the usual guard house sits. The entrance is on the first floor and is now accessible via a stone staircase. In the past a wooden ladder was used. The window openings are small. Numerous loopholes can be found at ground level . A wall once surrounded the facility.
