The Little Cumbrae Old Lighthouse ( German : Alter Little-Cumbrae-Leuchtturm ) is a former lighthouse on the Scottish island of Little Cumbrae . The complex is listed as a Scheduled Monument . A former inclusion in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest monument category A was revoked in 2016.

history

The lighthouse was built in 1757, making it the second oldest in Scotland. Its construction was decided in the previous year by Glasgow merchants in coordination with the local government in order to make the entry into the Firth of Clyde , and thus the shipping routes to Glasgow, safer. After only 35 years of operation, the construction costs were amortized and with the Little Cumbrae Lighthouse a more efficient system was built on the coast of the island, which went into operation in 1793. The Little Cumbrae Old Lighthouse ceased operations that year. In 1956 the Clyde Lighthouses Trust restored the building.

description

The approximately ten meter high tower is located at the highest point on the island. It is not on the coast, but in the interior of the island. The masonry is around one meter thick. The cylindrical tower is open at the top and once carried an iron basket in which an open coal fire was burning.
