The Free Art License (orig. French License Art Libre , LAL ) is a French license for free content with copyleft feature . It allows the free distribution and modification of works placed under this license for both commercial and non-commercial use.

The main features of the LAL include:

  • Obligation to name the author in a form that enables a clear assignment to the work;
  • Mention of the license and easy findability of the associated license text, optionally by linking, by printing a web link or printing the license text;
  • Variants derived from a work published under this license must also be placed under this license;
  • The version number and language version of the license are not binding for the subsequent user or processor.

The license is also considered a free license by the Free Software Foundation and corresponds to the definition of free licenses. The authors of the license refer to the compatibility with the Bern Convention for the Protection of Works of Literature and Art . Apart from that, it is very similar to the Creative Commons license variant cc-by-sa . The Free Art License Version 1.3 and the Creative Commons license variant cc-by-sa Version 4.0 have been officially declared compatible. With immediate effect, a reciprocal integration of content under the two licenses is possible without any clarification of rights.
