Locally Administered Address

A Locally Administered Address (LAA) is a MAC address assigned locally to a network card by software , which overwrites the Universally Administered Address (UAA) originally specified by the manufacturer .

The U / L bit (which indicates whether it is a Locally Administered Address or a Universally Administered Address ) is set to 1.

The use of a Locally Administered Address is rather uncommon because it results in a loss of the (worldwide) uniqueness of the UAA and high costs (2500 USD for the registration of an OID). In contrast, there are only minor advantages (manageability, systematizability).

The counterpart of the Locally Administered Address is the Universally Administered Address .
