The London Library is the world's largest independent lending library . It was founded in 1841 by Thomas Carlyle , who was dissatisfied with the rules of the British Library . In order to alleviate one of Carlyle's dissatisfactions, he planned to allow library members to use the books at home.

The London Library does not receive any government funding, which is why it has high membership fees (£ 445 annually as of June 2012).
