Long Stone (Frotoft)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Long Stone (also known as Langsteen, South Shore Stone, Frotoft or Westova) by Frotoft is located at the Frotoft courtyard complex on the Orkney island of Rousay , directly north of the coastal road that runs along Wyre Sound. It probably dates from the late Neolithic or Bronze Age (late 3rd or early 2nd millennium BC)

The about 2.25 m high menhir ( English Standing Stone ) stands about 20 m above sea level in its original location. It is 0.8 m wide and 0.3 m thick at the base and tapers towards the top to 0.6 m wide and 0.18 m thick. On its northwest side there is a small notch 1.5 m above the ground. The stone broke at some point, but the pieces were put back together.

The monument was first protected in 1936, but the documentation did not meet standards.

Nearby is the Broch Knowe of Burrian , while the Broch of Burrian is on North Ronaldsay .
