Lotto (parlor game)
Lotto is also the name of a previously popular parlor game that has been preserved as a children's game in the form of the picture lotto ; bingo, which is popular in Great Britain and the USA, is a derivative of this game.
The following description is based on Meyer's Konversationslexikon from 1905:
Each participant receives one to three number cards, which are usually three rows high and nine wide. On each row there are five numbers from the sequence 1 - 90, four fields remain empty. One (1 - 10) are in the first, tens (11 - 20) in the second, twenty (21 - 30) in the third vertical row, etc.
There is no limit to the number of participants in the game, as there is a very large number of combinations of five numbers from 1 - 90 and therefore an extremely large number of cards can be dealt. When everyone has received their cards and has done their part, a crier pulls tablets from a bag, which also have the digits from 1 to 90, and announces them. Everyone who has a hot number on his card covers this number, and whoever is first to occupy a fifth (latitude) wins.
