Luca Damiani (born November 8, 1984 in Embrun ) is a former Italian cyclist .

Athletic career

In his U23 days he won cyclo-cross races in Torre d'Isola and Ascoli Piceno . He was also twice third in the Italian cyclocross championship in the U23 class. From 2007 he drove for the American Continental Team Colavita / Sutter Home Cooking Light . In his first season there, he won a stage on the road at the Vuelta Ciclista Por Un Chile Líder .

Damiani was active as an elite driver until 2012 and drove road races in the USA during this time , but he was denied major successes. In the winter months he returned to Europe to compete in cyclo-cross races; he was a member of the Italian national team. In 2010 his case caused quite a stir because the US authorities initially refused him another visa. His team, Kenda, produced “Free Luca” T-shirts that were sold to raise the necessary costs.

In 2013 Luca Damiani returned to Italy and competed in cyclo-cross and mountain bike races . In October 2013, he had such severe unexplained headaches that he was hospitalized and placed in an artificial coma. After a few days, however, his health improved and he was able to leave the hospital.
