Air freight replacement traffic

Air freight substitute transport ( Road Feeder Service ) is the name for the transport of air freight shipments with an air waybill by road. In technical jargon, one speaks of RFS (road feeder service). Air freight substitute traffic also serves to equalize freight capacities at large airports. Air France Cargo accepts the air freight at Frankfurt am Main airport and then takes it overland for dispatch to Frankfurt-Hahn airport .

The international airlines have their own branches at the main airports and organize the main route, i.e. real transport by plane from one place to another.

Once the aircraft has landed, there are also shipments for other nearby cities with airports on board. Since the onward flight is far too expensive due to the fuel costs, landing fees , etc., the route to the destination by truck is used in the night jump procedure . Air freight arriving from distant countries may be transported up to 500 km or more by truck.

The trucks used in alternative air freight transport have some peculiarities with regard to their loading properties. For example, the trailers or swap bodies are equipped with so-called “roller beds” in order to be able to accommodate specially constructed aircraft containers that correspond exactly to the interior of an aircraft fuselage. Some trailers are built particularly high (jumbo trailers or jumbo trailers).

When the consignments have been loaded at the airport, they are unloaded at the “handling agent” in the early morning following onward transport overnight. This is the permanent representative of the airlines that do not have their own office at the airport. The latter makes the shipment available for collection by the air freight forwarder or the final recipient in his warehouse.
