Luftgau badge of the Feld-Luftgaukommando Belgium-Northern France

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Luftgau plaque of the Feld-Luftgaukommando Belgium-Nordfrankreich was a non-bearable award of the German Air Force during the Second World War , which was donated by General der Flieger Wilhelm Wimmer , in his capacity as commander of the Feld-Luftgaues Belgium-Nordfrance and awarded for the first time in 1943 . The prerequisite for the award was a period of at least three years in the Luftgau.

First form

The square plaque, initially made of a white ceramic tile , is 150 × 150 mm in size and shows the Luftwaffe national badge, slightly offset to the right, below the upper edge, as well as the following five-line Fraktur inscription: In recognition of / special merits / in three years of service / in the Luftgau / Belgium, Northern France . Behind the word Luftgau , which was renamed Feld-Luftgau with effect from December 16, 1943 , is the symbol of a lion. Both the national emblem and the writing are red-brown in color.

Second form

As a result, a bronze medal with a diameter of 41 mm was awarded from 1944 , which shows a seated lion in the center of its obverse , which can also be found on the Waterloo monument ("Butte du Lion") . The lion is surrounded by two small oak leaves crossed at the bottom and the following inscription: THE GERMAN NATION MUST BE MAINTAINED . The reverse of the medal shows the six-line inscription in the middle field: FOR / LOYALTY / SERVICES / IN THE AREA OF / LUFTGAUKOMMANDOS / BELGIUM NORTH OF FRANCE and the sovereign badge of the Air Force underneath. This symbolism is encompassed by two open oak leaves that are crossed at the bottom and curved upwards, which unite at their upper and open ends in an iron cross with a central swastika. However, there are also portable versions of this non-wearable decoration that show the obverse of the medal and have a brooch pin soldered onto the back. However, their diameter is only 21 mm.
