An air telescope or aerial telescope is a telescope in which the objective and the eyepiece are not connected by a tube (tube). This type of telescope was invented in 1675 by the brothers Christiaan and Constantijn Huygens and published by Christiaan in his work Astroscopia Compendiaria in 1684 .

They attached the objective lens to a mast in a very short tube. The eyepiece was also mounted in a short tube piece. They connected these two tube pieces with a taut string so that the correct distance did not have to be readjusted for each observation.
