Lucifer's Hammer (Eng. Original title: Lucifer's Hammer ) is a novel by the authors Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven , which was published in 1977.

action

The plot depicts (for the first time in a novel) the downfall of modern civilization due to the impact of a comet .

When an amateur astronomer discovers a new comet (called Lucifer's Hammer ), it is initially assumed that the earth is not threatened. A few months later, the comet breaks up and the debris falls to earth. There are gigantic tidal waves , earthquakes and climate changes .

A new age begins for the survivors, marked by the struggle for survival and the attempt to rebuild civilization.

  • Lucifer's hammer was nominated for the Hugo Award in 1978 .
  • In one of the different levels of action, a minor character appears who inspired David Brin to write the novel Postman . Most of the peculiarities of this figure are already clearly recognizable in Lucifer's hammer.
