In addition to diagnostics, the Kiel Lymph Node Register is also used for archiving and systematic research into diseases, particularly of the lymphatic system . It was founded in 1964 by the German pathologist Karl Lennert . The Kiel Lymph Node Register is the birthplace of the Kiel classification of malignant lymphomas from 1974.

As a reference center for all lymphoma studies , it has been named by the Malignant Lymphoma Competence Network . It cooperates closely with all study groups. The section takes the position of coordinating reference pathology within the studies for pediatric lymphomas (NHL-BFM), the German study group for low malignant lymphomas (GLSG) and the European mantle cell lymphoma network . The German Cancer Aid supports this reference diagnosis within the framework of funded therapy studies.
