Lynx is a text-based web browser that was developed under Unix , but is now available for almost all operating systems. Among other things, it is suitable for use on pure text terminals without a mouse .

The browser was developed around 1992 at the University of Kansas , is still widespread today and is one of the browsers with the longest development history. Before the program was adapted to the World Wide Web and its http protocol , Lynx was a client for a proprietary hypertext protocol . Elements from gopher were used. Lynx was released in 1995 under the GPL free software license .

In current versions, instead of graphics, their alternative texts appear in the “ altattribute of the “ imgelement (if available) or their file names . Optionally, graphics can also be displayed as links and viewed via an external program. Frames appear as a series of individually selectable links , along with the text of the " noframes" element. Lynx also supports cookies , client - side reference-sensitive graphics ( imagemap ) and mouse operation, but tables only to a limited extent and JavaScript not at all.

Text browsers are very fast compared to their graphics-based competitors.

Also popular is the ability to Lynx as HTML interpreter in Shell - scripts to use to scan automatically to certain sites. Lynx is also used as part of web crawlers . For example, scripts can be recorded with Lynx, which can then be adjusted and replayed.

In times of static web pages, Lynx was well suited to check web pages for readability using a Braille display or screen reader , such as blind people use them. Today, however, Lynx should no longer be used for testing. Development has also advanced in the area of screen readers. To get a realistic impression of how a website is presented to blind people, it is better to use NVDA or JAWS today. Otherwise the results may be falsified.
