Meal letter

The Mählbrief , Maalbrief or Zerte is the document about the construction contract for a merchant ship . Until about 1900 z. B. the Russian port authorities when declaring a foreign merchant ship from the captain, in addition to other ship's papers , the presentation of the officially certified meal letter. In addition to the type, dimensions and tonnage of the ship, the document had to specify the payment modalities between the shipowner and the builder. In addition, the place and time of the keel-laying, the day of launching and completion as well as the time and place of the handover to the shipowner had to be included. As also from the ship certificate the ownership structure of the ship at the time of clearance had to be evident to the clearance authorities from the meal letter.
