Mönchemühle Blankenburg
The Mönchemühle Blankenburg is the former water mill of the Cistercian monastery Michaelstein near Blankenburg (Harz) on the northern edge of the Harz in Saxony-Anhalt .
history
An oil mill used by the monastery was first mentioned in a document in the 15th century. The present mill building was built on its foundation walls in the 19th century.
The mill was operated by the water of the Goldbach , which was dammed south of the mill building. The Mönchemühlenteich is now used as a recreational area. During a storm on June 7, 1905, the approximately 40-meter-thick dam of the pond broke and the pent-up water poured into the birch valley with a large tidal wave. This resulted in damage to the monk mill building.
During the GDR times, the Mönchemühle was used as a company children's holiday camp for VEB Schwermaschinenbau "Karl Liebknecht" (SKL) , and then until 2014 as a holiday hotel. The monk mill has been closed since then. Today, above the Mönchemühle, a forest and excursion restaurant is operated on the Mönchemühlenteich for tourists and as a local recreation area Blankenburg.
