Mühlauersäge

The Mühlauersäge is a museum in Fusch an der Glocknerstrasse , which is dedicated to the topic of wood, starting with the seeds of the trees up to the products made from wood. The somewhat hidden museum can be found if you follow the street in the center of Fusch towards the church and then past the municipal office and the elementary school to the sawmill.

history

The museum emerged from a sawmill founded by Martin Mühlauer (1841–1905) and operated with water power . The saw was taken over in 1905 by his son Josef Mühlauer (1884–1975), who in 1907 had it entered in the commercial register as a ratified sawing trade. In 1913, he expanded the water drive into a power station that supplied the entire town of Fusch an der Glocknerstrasse with electricity, a company that was pioneering at the time. In 1948, his son Martin Mühlauer (1916–2006) took over the business and expanded it with a new sawmill (today the Blockhausbauer building ). The new plant has been PEFC ( Pan European Forest Certification ) certified since 2003 , but is currently reported as dormant.

In 2004, the Mühlauer daughter Brigitte de Mas and her husband Josef de Mas redesigned the facility into a museum with a focus on wood .

Exhibition concept

The building of the old sawmill was converted into a museum room. Historical tools and machines of the various professions that have to do with wood extraction and wood processing are presented here. It begins with a depiction of the earlier life of the woodcutters , who lived in bark huts in a rather Spartan way during their work and had to provide for themselves. As a wood processing industry u. a. the carpentry trade, the Wagner, the cooper, the shingle maker or the turner are represented. Finished wooden products (mainly toys and household utensils) are available for purchase in a museum shop.

Another showroom is located in the area of the new sawmill hall. Here the focus is on the products that are made of wood or made with the use of wood. These include applications that are well known, such as musical instruments, but also less common ones, such as. B. the use of wood ( cellulose ) for the production of clothing, as a food ingredient or as a binding agent in toothpaste. The new sawmill is used on a case-by-case basis for schoolchildren, for example from the technical college in Hallein with a focus on wood, for demonstration purposes.

A wooden bowling alley was set up as a separate museum building , which is also available for practical bowling games. The premises and the event room, the “Holzknechtstube”, are also located on the site. In addition to a local culinary offer, there are many interesting equipment details that are made of wood (such as door openers) and provide suggestions for your own designs.

The museum concept also includes temporary special exhibitions on site-specific, historical topics, such as the special exhibition Bad Fusch - A Journey through the Centuries . Earlier topics were The legendary Fuscher Eisschützen or Geige has found a new home .

For school classes and groups of children, special offers are made on a case-by-case basis, such as building tree houses for children , making charcoal or cutting with a pull saw .
