The 1st Munich Ball Throwing Union is a pétanque club in Munich. The 1st MKWU is affiliated with the Bavarian Pétanque Association (BPV) and has around 170 members (as of December 2018).

The members of the 1st MKWU play almost every day in the Hofgarten in Munich, either on the west side between the outdoor restaurants or on the north side parallel to Galeriestraße. There is also a boules hall on the site of the former Bayern barracks in the Freimann district of Munich.

successes

In 2010, the 1st Munich Ball Throwing Union achieved promotion to the Bundesliga, where the 1st team immediately became German champions.

There are currently 4 players in the national team. In the past several national championship titles, German championships and international titles could be won.

With Michael Dörhöfer, the MKWU also provides the current President of the German Pétanque Association as well as the national trainer Philipp Zusatz and the youth coach of the DPV Stefanie Schwarzbach.

League operation

The 1. MKWU has been represented by several teams since the league began in 1993. In 2019 a total of 6 teams will compete for the club, they will play in the Bundesliga (MKWU 1), Bayernliga (MKWU 2), Landesliga (MKWU 3, 4, 5) and district league (MKWU 6).

Court garden tournaments

The Hofgarten tournament emerged from a birthday party in 1983 and has been one of the largest petanque tournaments in Germany with top-class German and international participation since the mid-1990s.

In 2017 there were 328 teams (doubles: 2 players per team) at the start, in 2018 it was switched to triplets (3 players per team, 212 teams). Since 2008 the tournament has been held annually on the weekend around the French national holiday on July 14th as part of the "Grand Prix d'Allemagne" tournament series. The court garden tournament is license-free so that boules players can take part without restriction.
