Coin Treasure (Saxon Switzerland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The coin treasure from Saxon Switzerland is a hoard of 1494 coins that was found in May 2016 on the Kanstein Vorgipfel in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains. The coins date from the late 17th to the early 19th centuries. In terms of numbers, it is the largest Saxon coin find from this period.

Mountaineers found a large number of silver coins by accident in a crevice in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and immediately informed the police. The State Office for Archeology in Saxony managed the recovery of the coins, which were then examined and dated in the Münzkabinett Dresden . The oldest coin, a Saxon double groschen , was minted in 1693, the final coin is a Prussian thaler from 1817.

Some organic residues adhered to the coins. The youngest was in very good condition with no signs of wear. It is concluded from this that the landfill may have taken place in cloth bags shortly after the last coin was struck. This means that the resignation falls in the development phase after the Napoleonic wars and the Congress of Vienna .
