After the Second World War, when the M2 hand grenade used at the time showed many faults , the M26 was developed as a replacement. It was introduced as the standard hand grenade for the US armed forces in 1950. In the Vietnam War, the M26 and its versions were used by the US armed forces and replaced by the M67 from around 1970 .
