As part of this order, AM General developed the M809 series trucks. AM General supplied 92,000 of the M809s produced in the South Bend works to the US Army and other friendly armies. In addition to this large contract provided AM General from 1982 21.000 pieces of a modernized types of 5-ton trucks with the designation M939 Series (English M939 series ).

technology

AM General developed a completely new type of system for the M809 and M939, which allowed the truck drivers to let air out of the tires via a dashboard switch while driving, depending on the application. AM General had the CTIS (= Central Tire Inflation System) patented. It enabled greater mobility, while at the same time protecting the tires and thus extending their service life.

All M939 had a 180 kW NHC Cummins - diesel engine with a 5-speed Allison automatic transmission and two-stage reduction ( transfer case ). The top speed was around 86 km / h with a 6x6 all-wheel drive. They could be delivered with or without a front winch (ww / wow) as required. The pulling capacity of the winch was 9.1 tons (20,000 lb) and the on-board electrics work with 24 volts (two batteries with 12 V each in series, plus two for the starting process). The lifespan was 20 to 22 years.
