MHEG

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MHEG stands for Multimedia and Hypermedia information coding Expert Group , which is an ISO working group . In addition, the standard created by this group with the official name Coding of multimedia and hypermedia information and the number ISO / IEC 13522 is abbreviated with the aforementioned acronym .

This standard defines a format for multimedia documents in an executable form so that devices that support MHEG can display such a document, similar to a browser that displays HTML . However, MHEG offers the representation of hypermedia content including information on time synchronization in order to be able to define how, when the document content is presented, for example, video and audio from different sources are temporally related to one another. The main focus lies in the broad support of multimedia objects in the possibility of interactivity of the human viewer with the content.

The motivation for this standard, which was originally published by the ISO in 1997, was the lack of a standardized document description language with multimedia-relevant capabilities. Since such a format is required in particular for the exchange of information in interactive television and the proprietary solutions already in use at that time were to be replaced, several organizations became active and developed standards, such as MHP , which is used in Germany for DVB , among others .

The script language , which is defined by the version of the standard called MHEG-5, is used in Great Britain by the BBC for transmission on digital television. The UK Parliament has estimated that there are 5 million MHEG-5 enabled set-top boxes in use in the UK.

In addition to home shopping , video on demand and the display of the Internet on television, MHEG is also capable of applications that are much more dependent on interaction, such as games.
