MP3Gain is a free , platform-independent program that can normalize MP3 type audio files . Using replay gain , the audio files are adjusted to a volume specified by the user without affecting the actual audio data stored in the file.
The program was written in C and is available in many languages. It was released under the GPL license .
functionality
MP3Gain can manipulate the files in two different ways:
- Writing metadata
- Modification of the MP3 data, whereby information about the undoing of the action is saved as metadata in the audio file
In both cases, the first step is to use the replay gain algorithm to calculate the rate of change in volume. This happens either per song or per album.
In the first case, the program writes the calculated rate of change to the file as a day in APEv2 format . This tag can then be read by other programs that have implemented Replay Gain.
In the latter case the average volume is changed in each MP3 frame and information to undo the change is saved as a tag. These changes do not change the actual audio information, so they are "lossless" and can be completely undone if the undo information is saved in the file, which is optional.
