The term MPEG audio can mean:

  • MPEG-1 Audio Layer 1 (MP1)
  • MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2 (MP2), a sound format that is mainly used on VideoCDs and DAB.
  • MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 ( MP3 ), a popular "Internet audio format "
  • MPEG-2 BC Multichannel , a sound format that is backwards compatible with MP2 and which should have "set the tone" on European DVDs.
  • MPEG-2 AAC , a not backward compatible new, lossy audio format.
  • MPEG-4 AAC , a further development of MPEG-2 AAC.
  • MPEG-4 ALS , the last member of the MPEG audio family - the first and only format in this series that is lossless.
