Ma Zhong (Wu)
Ma Zhong ( Chinese 馬忠 ) was a general of the Chinese Wu Dynasty at the time of the Three Kingdoms . Almost nothing is known from historical sources about his life, only that he was subordinate to the Wu general Pan Zhang ( 潘璋 ).
In Luo Guanzhong's historical novel, The Story of the Three Kingdoms , its shape takes on more distinct features. Ma Zhong moves here with his commander Pan Zhang in the battle of Fancheng (219) against Guan Yu , whom he personally arrests. In gratitude for his deed, the warlord Sun Quan gave him the red hare , Guan Yu's legendary horse. However, in the face of its master's death, the animal refused to eat and followed Guan Yu into death. When Liu Bei embarks on a campaign of revenge, Ma Zhong is murdered by the traitors Mi Fang and Fu Shiren , who send his head as a tribute to Liu Bei so that they can join him.
