Madalbertus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Madalbertus († November 18, 857 ) was abbot of the Steigerwaldkloster Megingaudshausen from 821 or 843 to 857 . He also appears in the line of abbots from Münsterschwarzach , because the Megingaudshausen monastery is considered the predecessor abbey .

The monastery in front of Madalbertus

Abbot Madalbertus was the second abbot of the Megingaudshausen monastery in the Steigerwald . It had been founded shortly before, in the year 816, by the East Franconian Count Megingaud and his wife Imma. As the easternmost Carolingian monastery, it was supposed to promote the proselytizing of the pagan population groups. Benedict von Aniane , the "Abbot General" of the Franconian monasteries was chosen as the first head and brought some Gallic monks with him to Franconia .

Life

Very little information is available about the life of Abbot Madalbertus. Heinrich Wagner assigned it to the Mattonen family , for whom the abbey was originally built as a family monastery. Wagner derives this from the abbot's name: names that begin with the syllable Madal- are abbreviated to “Matto”, the leading name of the gender. Vogt, however, suspects an origin from what is now France . Maybe Madalbertus began his spiritual career in the Rhineland.
