Memorial on Unity Square

The memorial for the anti-fascist resistance fighters is a memorial on the southwest corner of the Platz der Einheit in Potsdam.

history

The memorial was erected in 1975 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of liberation from fascism. The architect Werner Berg and the sculptor Joachim Fitzermann worked together to create the design. The L-shaped sandstone wall is 30 meters long and 2.40 meters high. Two inscriptions in capitals emerge from the inside of the wall: "OUR VICTIM, OUR FIGHT AGAINST FASCISM AND WAR" and "THE LIVING TO ADMINISTRATION AND OBLIGATION". In the forecourt there was originally a pyramid made of sheet steel, which was made up of several red triangles. The work referred to the red triangle that political prisoners in concentration camps wore on their clothes. The SED district leadership rejected the pyramid and had it removed. Instead, a one-meter-high stainless steel flame bowl with a diameter of 2.50 meters was erected in 1980, made by the metal designer Christian Roehl (1940-2013). From the bowl, designed as an open flower with 16 petals, alternating natural stone slabs and paving stones spread out in a radial pattern.
