May parade

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The so-called May Parade was the official festival of the SED to celebrate May 1st . Associations and groups of various party and company organizations as well as military associations paraded past the official gallery of the party leadership, sometimes in an open, relaxed manner, sometimes in marching order up to the goose step . Similar parades took place in numerous socialist states (e.g. the Soviet Union ) on May 1st. Such celebrations should mobilize the masses and strengthen the we-feeling in society. At the same time they served as a demonstration and self-assurance of military strength.
