Majordomo is an administration application for electronic mailing lists (mailing list management system, or MLM for short). Majordomo is open source and was developed by Great Circle Associates. It works with Sendmail or other mail transfer agents like Postfix on UNIX and similar operating systems.

Its heyday began as early as 1992 when many users had access to e-mail but could not access the World Wide Web or Usenet directly. Therefore, the proposed procedure for logging in and out using e-mail commands now appears to be a bit cumbersome. Later, web-based frontends were created for more convenient operation. The best-known front end is MajorCool , which is integrated into the Majordomo installation on the server, and with the help of which the list can be operated and managed without e-mail commands.

While practically all mailing lists used to be operated with Majordomo, many list operators have now switched to newer and more secure mailing list management systems. Alternatively, some commercial hosting providers such as Yahoo Groups or kbx8 are now offering mailing lists.

Word origin

Majordomo is the English form of majordomus , a head of a house or (royal) court who is independently entitled to make decisions in the absence of his employer. Originally from Latin major domus , administrator of the house.
