Mamajuana, made and bottled in the Dominican Republic

Mamajuana is an alcoholic drink native to the Dominican Republic .

composition

Mamajuana is mainly made from red wine, brown rum , honey and a mixture of woods and herbs. The composition of this mixture varies from region to region, but the most common ingredients are:

Red vermouth or gin can also be used as an alternative to red wine .

use

The Indians living on Hispaniola used the wood and herb mixture as medicine. Mamajuana was originally made as a tea or brew. Mamajuana was drunk as a tea against headaches, migraines, nausea, as a preventative measure to strengthen the immune system or to increase male erectile function. For joint pain, rheumatism and muscle pain, a sud was used for compresses. Later, essential oils from the herbal mixture were dissolved in alcohol. Today, Mamajuana is primarily a luxury food and is often used as a digestif . The locals still think today: "Mamajuana heals whatever torments you". They swear by its medicinal effects and praise it as a sexual enhancer.

In Germany, Mamajuana is rarely offered with the woods and herbs, because if the woods stay in the bottle longer than described, the resulting drink becomes bitter. Many tourists bring ready-made wood and herb mixtures home from the Dominican Republic. However, caution is advised with these bags, because they can contain prohibited or harmful herbs or be contaminated with harmful substances. Ready-made Mamajuanas from the bottle are also produced in the Dominican Republic, but are checked in Germany and examined by laboratory analysis institutes.
