Mantilatos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mantilatos ( Μαντιλάτος , from Greek μαντίλι handkerchief, because the dancers swing a handkerchief in their hand) is one of the fastest dances in Greece . It is danced in a 7/16 rhythm. The reason why it is no longer widespread and is almost only danced in Thrace is probably due to the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, which was agreed after the " Great Disaster ", and the associated departure of the Greek population. Until 1922 the dance was widespread along the entire Black Sea coast as far as Trapezounta .
