Mantus (mythology)
Mantus is a deity from the mythology of the Etruscans . The Etruscans saw in Mantus the ruler of the underworld , the realm of the dead. He leads the souls of the deceased into the underworld. He is also called Charun (from Greek Charon ).
Images of mantus can be found on Etruscan coffins, which show him as a man with wild facial features, saty tubes , wings and tunic . Mostly he is shown with a hammer, sometimes with a sword.
The Italian city of Mantua is said to be named after Mantus .
