Mar (title)

Mar-Jacob-Stein (inscription rotated)

The title Mar , more pronounced Mor, comes from the Syriac language (ܡܪܝ) and means as much as Lord or My Lord . It is placed in front of the personal name.

Syrian churches

As an honorary title, it is available to all bishops and also to the saints in the Syrian churches (see for example Syrian-Maronite Church of Antioch # Ecclesiastical Organization and Patriarchy ).

Rabbinical Hebrew

In Middle Hebrew , which was also used in the synagogues in early Central Europe , this is still the salutation or designation for a particularly valued rabbi . One of the oldest written evidence of this is the tombstone of Mar Jacob from 1156, which was reused as a spoil and probably comes from the Judenbüchel cemetery in front of medieval Cologne .
