Marah Land Zoo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Marah Land Zoo , also Marah Zoo Land (from Arabic مرح, DMG maraḥ  , happiness'), is an animal enclosure in Palestine . It is located in the Gaza Strip in the south of the city of Gaza . The owner is Abu Ismail.

Because of the Israeli border barrier, most of the former 200 animals were smuggled through tunnels from Egypt. A pair of lions , wolves, foxes, hyenas, buzzards , ostriches, owls, storks, dogs, cats, a camel, snakes, monkeys, mice and goldfish were shown in 33 enclosures . Worldwide media attention received two donkeys that were repainted as zebras with hair dye every few months . A zoo in Cairo is said to have taken up this idea later. Israel's Safari Ramat Gan animal park had offered the delivery of real zebras subject to quality control, but this did not materialize because of the political upheavals.

In addition to the animals, there was a toy train and a small bumper car for children in 2009 .

The zoo was also shelled during the Gaza War . Only 25 to 30 animals were then left in their enclosures. Many animals were killed or fled, such as the pair of lions, which were later recaptured.
