Marathon (arcadians)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marathon ( gr. Μαραθών) was an Arcadian in Greek mythology . He accompanied the sons of Tyndareus in the war against Theseus . He followed the instructions of an oracle and took position in front of his own battle line and thus sacrificed himself. Plutarch says that because of this act, the city of Marathon was named after him, while Pausanias gives another marathon , the son of Epopeus , as the namesake.
