Marcus Simplicius Simplex was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 3rd century AD .
An inscription on an altar, which was found at Brocolitia Castle and which is dated to the first half of the 3rd century, shows that Simplex was prefect of the Cohors I Batavorum , who was stationed in the province of Britannia at that time .
