Mary of Bulgaria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maria Assena (bulg .: Мария; † after 1216) was a Bulgarian princess from the house of Assen and an empress of the Latin Constantinople as the second wife of the emperor Heinrich .

She was a daughter of the tsar of the Bulgarians Kalojan (Johannitzes) , who died in 1207 fighting the Latins who had established themselves in the Byzantine region after the conquest of Constantinople ( Fourth Crusade ). The throne of the Bulgarians was then usurped by his nephew Boril , who sought peace with the Latins in order to consolidate his rule. In 1212 he married Maria to the Latin Emperor Heinrich .

Emperor Heinrich died in 1216. Contemporary chroniclers suspected that his death was caused by poisoning and, among others, suspected Maria of the act. From then on, nothing more has been passed on about them.
