With the Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Actions ( English Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Actions , MSCA), the European Union wants to promote the international and cross-sectoral careers of scientists. The measures are part of the European framework program for research and innovation, Horizon 2020 . They were named after the two-time Nobel Prize winner Marie Skłodowska Curie . The funding program was set up by the European Commission to make scientific careers more attractive, to make Europe more interesting as a research location, and to create a strong pool of European researchers.

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions do not have any predetermined scientific disciplines or areas. When applying, the researchers are free to choose their proposed research topic. The funding consists of several parts:

  • Training of young researchers: Supporting the career prospects of young people through structured research training in networks of institutions, so-called Innovative Training Networks (ITN).
  • Individual funding of experienced researchers: Support for the career development of experienced researchers through individual research projects to expand their skills, so-called Individual Fellowships (IF).
  • Personnel exchange : Support for international or cross-sectoral cooperation and knowledge transfer through personnel exchange within the framework of cooperation between institutions, so-called Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE). Industrial doctorates are also supported, i.e. a combination of academic research and work in a company.
  • Co-funding for mobility programs : Support for regional, national or international mobility programs for doctoral students and experienced researchers that are in line with the principles of Charter & Code, so-called Co-funding of Regional, National and International Programs (COFUND).
  • Other measures: Support for the improvement of career prospects and other aspects of careers in research in Europe through general accompanying measures (e.g. European Researchers' Night (NIGHT), studies and analyzes).
