The Marienkapelle on the Sulperg

The Lady Chapel of Wettingen is a chapel built around 1749 on the Sulperg.

history

Already in 1738 the Wettinger monastery builder Bartholomäus Würsch planned to build a chapel. On March 13, 1738, he bought a piece of land on the Sulperg from the monastery for 15 guilders . This did not happen at first, however, and the land was inherited by the brothers Franz and Sebastian Bürgler, who were obliged by will to build a chapel on the inherited land. With the support of the abbot and convent of Wettingen Abbey, the Marienkapelle was finally built around 1749. Since their maintenance was neglected over time, a renovation was necessary in 1836, which was paid for by the monastery. On the initiative of the monastery, the chapel was equipped with an altar and a picture of the Virgin Mary. In 1851, an easily accessible path to the chapel was built as a slave labor, as it was frequently visited and a procession took place on August 15th .
