The US conservation organization Marine Conservation Institute (MCI, formerly Marine Conservation Biology Institute ) is committed to marine conservation . The primary goal of the organization from Seattle in Washington State is the networking and the provision of data for global marine conservation areas . The institute is involved in the Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative (GOBI) .

The organization was founded in 1996 by the ecologist Elliott Norse and in 2011 shortened its name to Marine Conservation Institute . In 1993, Elliot published an article in the journal Global Marine Biological Diversity , in which he referenced the most cited articles in marine environmental protection and wanted to draw attention to global marine conservation issues. In 1996 he founded the MCI with the aim of directly influencing political decision-makers in terms of marine matters.
