Azerbaijani-Australian relations

Azerbaijani-Australian relations were established when Australia recognized Azerbaijan as an independent state on December 26, 1991. In 2012 the two countries celebrated 20 years of bilateral relations.

Population numbers

During the 2011 Australian census, 450 people reported having Azerbaijani ancestors. However, it is believed that there are more people of Azerbaijani origin in Australia.

Help

In 2006, Australia participated in the clearance of mines in the Saloğlu district of Azerbaijan as part of the NATO Partnership for Peace Trust Fund and donated AUD 50,000 to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Committee .

Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Xələf Xələfov visited Australia in April 2012, whereupon Australian Special Envoy Russell Trood paid a return visit.

Australia does not have an embassy in Azerbaijan. The Australian embassy in Ankara , Turkey, is the diplomatic representation for Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan established an embassy in Canberra, Australia in June 2013 .

İlham Əliyev visited Sydney on the occasion of the Olympic Games in 2000. In April 2016, around 150 Azerbaijani and Armenians demonstrated in front of the Azerbaijani embassy, during which there were violent verbal arguments due to differing views on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict .

economy

In 2014, Australia exported goods worth A $ 9.24 million to Azerbaijan, with butter accounting for the largest share at A $ 6.38 million. Azerbaijan exported A $ 85.04 million worth of goods, mostly unprocessed oil , during the same period .
